Short answer

OpenAI's crawler documentation describes no form or application for submitting a site to ChatGPT. For a site that wants to appear in ChatGPT search, it recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and allowing requests from the IP ranges OpenAI publishes. Submitting URLs through Search Console or IndexNow can speed up discovery, but nothing guarantees you will appear.

The answer to "How do I add my website to ChatGPT?" is in OpenAI's own documentation: it describes no submission form, and the lever you hold is bot access. We read the documents on 26 October 2026.

## Is there a form to submit a site to ChatGPT?

OpenAI's "Overview of OpenAI Crawlers" page describes no form or application route. It covers robots.txt tags and IP ranges. We cannot prove that something exists nowhere. What we can say is that we found no such route in this document or in the other pages on ChatGPT search that we could open. OpenAI's help pages and its announcement post returned a 403 from our environment, so we could not read them.

## What can you do, according to OpenAI's documentation?

The document describes three separate identities, each with its own setting:

| Identity | Purpose | What it means for your site |
| --- | --- | --- |
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfacing websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features | Allow it in robots.txt if you want to appear |
| GPTBot | Crawling content that may be used to train generative AI foundation models | Disallowing it signals that content should not be used for training |
| ChatGPT-User | Visiting a page when a user asks ChatGPT a question | Because the user initiates it, robots.txt rules may not apply. It is not used for Search |

More detail from the document:

- Sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.
- OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and allowing requests from its published IP ranges if you want to appear.
- For search, a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to reach OpenAI's systems.
- If you allow both OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot, OpenAI may use the results of a single crawl for both purposes.

So the main lever you hold is access. To decide which bots to allow, see our [robots.txt guide for AI bots](https://ruesandora.com/writing/robots-txt-for-ai-bots). A firewall can also stop an allowed bot at the door: [is your CDN blocking AI bots?](https://ruesandora.com/writing/is-cdn-blocking-ai-bots)

## What do Search Console, Bing and IndexNow do?

These tools do not teach ChatGPT anything. They help search indexes discover your pages.

- **Google Search Console.** The URL Inspection tool requests a crawl for a few URLs, and a sitemap covers many. Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks, that a requested crawl does not guarantee inclusion in search results, and that submitting individual URLs has a quota. Requesting the same URL again does not get it crawled faster.
- **IndexNow.** An open protocol that tells search engines when your site changes. The endpoint list on the IndexNow FAQ names Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam, Yep and Amazon. Google is not on the list. A submission is shared among participating engines. It does not guarantee indexing, and every submitted URL counts toward your crawl quota.

OpenAI's document does not say which outside index ChatGPT search uses. What we found, and what is missing, is in [which search index feeds AI answers](https://ruesandora.com/writing/which-search-index-feeds-ai-answers). Here too, we found no official document showing that submitting URLs to Bing gets you into ChatGPT.

## A short checklist

1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. If you want to stay out of training, handle GPTBot separately.
2. Check that your CDN and firewall do not block OpenAI's published IP ranges.
3. Confirm in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools that your pages are indexed.
4. Keep the sitemap current. On a site that changes often, consider IndexNow.
5. Wait and measure. No step guarantees you will appear in ChatGPT.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I apply somewhere to add my site to ChatGPT?

OpenAI's crawler documentation describes no such route. What you can do is give OAI-SearchBot access.

### If I allow OAI-SearchBot, will I show up in ChatGPT?

Allowing it is a precondition for appearing. OpenAI does not say it guarantees appearing.

### If I block GPTBot, do I drop out of ChatGPT search?

According to the document the settings are independent. Showing your site in search depends on OAI-SearchBot, while GPTBot relates to training content.

### Does IndexNow notify ChatGPT directly?

The IndexNow FAQ lists no ChatGPT or OpenAI endpoint. We found no document showing a direct notification.

### How long does it take?

We found no document giving a time. The only figure is that a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to take effect in search.
